Samsung will help you remember passwords with Palm Recognition

Samsung is looking for new ways to improve the security of its future smartphones. One of them, according to a new patent application, requires your palm. Yes, Samsung believes that it can use a users palm as a way of telling that the user is indeed the owner of the device.

It is common for users to forget their password, and that can be very frustrating. Being locked out of your device is a bad situation for us all. Now, imagine someone else knows your lock code and is trying to get it, well in that situation, this tech would be very helpful.

As per the patent, the front facing camera would take a picture of your palm and then scan the lines to ensure it is you. Once that’s done, the phone would reveal the hint for the password. Since it only uses the front camera, it is obviously not very secure. It can be fooled, but Samsung says that the password hint would be displayed across the palm lines in such a way that only the owner could get it.

We are skeptical about Samsung actually using this technology in future phones, but perhaps it would be available as an option. This is just a patent, and a company like Samsung files so many patents that never make it to the public.

Samsung’s current focus is on the upcoming Galaxy S9 and S9+, which are touted to feature some kind of Facial recognition tech similar to Apple’s FaceID. Palm recognition for revealing passwords seems a little less concerning at the moment. What do you think?
